The way products are marketed has evolved over the years. A large factor contributing to this evolution is the result of Generation Y consumers. Generation Y, otherwise known as millennials, loosely range from 35 to 18 years of age. Millennials are the generation that prefer shopping at c-stores in place of grocery stores, which is a great marketing opportunity for convenience store retailers! With 80 million millennials in the United States, these shoppers cannot be ignored. The following tips can assist in reaching your millennial customers:

  • Get Social- Millennials are the first generation to grow up surrounded by technology. Almost all millennials scroll through social media daily; this being said, creating social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn, will enhance business at the c-store. Once these pages are constructed, be sure to post daily updates, promotions, events and photos.
  • Promote- Millennials are known to be motivated by free or discounted offers which is why advertising new deals at your store is an effective way to boost sales. This generation of young adults has grown to be price sensitive shoppers who prefer a good deal over quality, brand or store loyalty. Something to try: give millennial shoppers a reason to post a picture with your products using a hashtag. If consumers use the hashtag, offer a deal. This incorporates product promotion along with getting socially connected to your millennial customers.
  • Snack Updates- Millennials love living a busy lifestyle, which means they are looking for a quick snack time stop throughout their activity-filled day. C-stores are the perfect place for them to pick up their snacks on the go! Next purchasing period, be sure to have small, quick meal options. These may include: proteins, fresh fruit cups, vegetables, and clean carbs.
